Agriculture in Our County
Dinwiddie County is one of only three counties in Virginia that commercially produce cotton, peanuts and tobacco.
Fewer than a dozen Virginia counties produce cotton and peanuts because of the need of these crops for a warm climate and the right soils. Of these, only Dinwiddie, Greensville and Sussex counties produce all three.
In 2002, farmers in Dinwiddie County harvested more than 700 acres of tobacco, 2,900 acres of corn, 1,200 acres of wheat, 10,500 acres of soybeans, 1,300 acres of peanuts, 6,500 acres of hay and nearly 1,800 acres of cotton.
In addition, this county has 6,300 head of cattle, mostly beef but some dairy. It also has hogs, sheep, laying hens and broiler chickens.
Some 225 residents here call farming their main occupation, and their 361 farms add up to 92,429 acres, according to the latest census of agriculture. Overall, Dinwiddie County’s agriculture generated more than $14.7 million in cash receipts in 2002.
