Agriculture in Our County
Cumberland County rests among the rolling hills of South Central Virginia. The county was named after Prince William, the Duke of Cumberland, the third son of George II.
There are 285 farms in Cumberland, and they occupy nearly 57,000 acres. About 9,700 head of cattle are raised here, most for beef production. A handful of farmers raise hogs and sheep as well.
Poultry farming has a significant presence in Cumberland. In 2007, poultry growers had nearly 142,000 laying hens and raised almost 14 million broilers.
Cumberland has several orchards, and cropland is used to grow corn, soybeans and hay.
