Agriculture in Our County
Agriculture is the lifeblood of Craig County, and it generated $3.6 million in cash receipts in 2002.
Among the hay, corn and wheat acreage, you will find beef cattle, dairy cows, sheep and goats located on 228 farms here.
The mountainous, grassy terrain of this Southwest Virginia county makes it an ideal location for raising beef cattle. Farmers raise more than 7,000 head of cattle in Craig.
There is also a smidgen of dairy and sheep farms as well as hog and poultry operations. To help feed those animals, farmers grow more than 7,000 acres of hay.
Some of these farms are located on U.S. Route 42, where you will see century-old farmhouses with rail fences and scenic old barns.
