Agriculture in Our County
Bordered on the north and east by the James River and the south by the Appomattox River, Chesterfield County was the site of the first scientific cultivation of tobacco in America.
Today, only a handful of farmers grow tobacco in this fast-growing urban county adjacent to Richmond.
However, agriculture continues to keep a foothold in Chesterfield. There are 214 farms in the county, and half include beef cattle.
In this east-central county, which was formed from Henrico County in 1749, broilers are raised on a handful of farms.
To help feed the animals they raise, Chesterfield County farmers grow wheat, soybeans and hay.
