Although about 25 percent of Caroline County’s land is occupied by Fort A.P. Hill, an army base, the county still has 59,229 acres of farmland.
This scenic Virginia county has 237 farms, which primarily grow feed grains and raise beef cattle, as well as a few hogs, sheep and laying hens.
Most farms produce corn, wheat, soybeans and hay. Soybeans top the list in Caroline, with 16,500 acres. In addition, Caroline produces 6,600 acres of wheat and 2,700 acres of barley.
Driving along rural roads in Caroline, one will see plenty of gently rolling, open fields of corn, wheat and soybeans, sometimes bordered by the scenic Pamunkey, Mattaponi or North Anna rivers.
Caroline agriculture generates $11.5 million in cash receipts, according to the latest agriculture census figures.
