Agriculture in Our County
Appomattox County, located in south central Virginia, is rich in history. It was here in 1865 that Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant to end the Civil War.
Appomattox is also rich in farmland. More than 389 farms are located in the county, and beef cattle are raised on about two-thirds of them. The gently sloping hills and pastureland provide ample grazing for 17,000 head of cattle.
Appomattox County farmers also grow 17, 000 acres of hay for supplemental feeding.
In addition to the beef cattle industry, there are still more than a dozen dairymen in the county, who milk a total of 500 cows.
There are several tobacco farms in the county as well. Farmers here grow 15 acres of fire-cured tobacco and 35 acres of flue-cured tobacco.
